The cedar, like the cypress, is valued for its strength; it was also once cherished for the scent of its resin. In Egypt, it was used to build ships, furniture, sarcophagi, and various utensils.
The cedar is characterized by its widely spaced branches and often features a flattened crown in adulthood. Its bark is light gray, becoming darker on older trees and fissured into scaly plates.
Native to the mountains of North Africa, specifically Algeria and Morocco, it is found in the wild only in the Atlas range. Acclimatized in Europe, particularly in plantations in the Mediterranean region, it is commonly used for ornamentation in parks and gardens.
