Neroli essence is an essential oil extracted from the blossom of the bitter orange tree, a lovely small white flower. Its name originates from Anne-Marie Orsini, Princess of Nérola (Italy), who particularly favored these white flowers, incorporating them into her bath, clothing, and palace. As for cotton, discovered by chance by an Indian intrigued by branches adorned with very soft white flakes, it has been cultivated for millennia. Alexander the Great quickly recognized the value of this plant, noting the quality of garments made from its fiber, lighter and finer than his own made from linen and wool.
Neroli is the fruit of the Bitter Orange tree, a shrub native to China and the Near East, which can grow up to 7 meters tall. Cotton is a plant fiber that surrounds the seeds of "true" cotton plants, shrubs of the Malvaceae family. This fiber, made up of almost pure cellulose, is typically processed into yarn which is then woven to produce fabrics.
Neroli is harvested in regions where bitter orange trees thrive, such as France, Italy, Morocco, Tunisia, Egypt, Lebanon, and Paraguay. The flowers are typically hand-picked from late April to early May. The cotton plant (genus Gossypium, family Malvaceae) is a shrub native to India, cultivated in many warm countries for the fibers surrounding the seeds of its fruit when mature. The plant's characteristics vary by country, but the best fibers come from the herbaceous cotton plant (50-60 cm).
